General FAQs

What are proofs?

Our photographers shoot anywhere from 100-200 photos per hour. We select the top 50-75 per hour. (We weed out the photos where you might be blinking or have spinach stuck in your teeth). The resulting photos are then edited and then hosted on an online gallery for you to view and/or share. These photos are called proofs. If your package includes printed proofs, we will provide 4×6 sized-prints in a gift box. You will also receive a CD of your proofs.

What are high-res files?

High-res files are your proofs, but are thoroughly edited such that they are suitable for printing. We allow you to reprint these files for your own personal use. You will receive a CD of your negatives, if they are included in your package. You are welcome to do whatever you want with your negatives, as long as it falls under the limited copyright release. If you would like to see a copy of the limited copyright release, let us know.

Do I own the copyright to the high-res files?

No.  According to federal law, we retain the copyright to the images we take. When we give you your high-res files on a CD, we will include a copyright release that gives you permission to use the images for specific purposes (for example: to make prints or other photo products).  You cannot transfer these rights to anyone else. Only the bride and groom have permission to use these images. For example, you cannot make a copy of the CD and send it to a cousin so that she can make her own prints.

You also cannot significantly alter the images we give you. For example, you can crop an image; however, you cannot alter it so that it looks different from the original images handed to you.

You cannot sell your CDs or prints from your wedding to anyone.

However, if you’d like to submit your wedding images to a wedding website, magazine, or something similar, please contact us with the details and we’ll do our best to make everyone happy.

I have the hi-res files. Should I still buy prints from you?

We always recommend that anything larger than a 4×6 be ordered through us….especially if you plan on framing them or putting them in your album. Our monitors are calibrated such that what we see on our screen is exactly what is printed through our professional printers. We also edit print orders further to give them that extra oomph for print. Here’s a sample of the transition from SOOC (straight out of the camera), to the proof (and hi-res file), to what is done for prints:

Why is wedding photography so expensive? It’s just a day’s work

Actually, we spend around 40-60 hours on a single wedding.  We spend 6-10 hours with you on your wedding day; 2-3 hours for your engagement session;  25-30 hours on post-processing; 5-10 hours on album design; and the remaining time on travel, correspondence, and administrative duties. There is also a great article on the true life of wedding photographers.

I booked the Base Package, but want to add an album or prints later. Is this possible?

Yes. We keep your files with us for up to two years. During this time, you can order albums, parent books, or additional prints. However, if an item is purchased outside of the original package, the current A La Carte prices apply. If you order an album with your package, not only are you ordering the album discounted as a part of the package, but you lock in the current album prices.

I need a special sized print that’s not listed on your shopping cart, can I still order it from you?

Let us know the size and we’ll work to see if we can still supply it.

I really like the style of Photographer XXX, but they are 3x our budget. Can you mimic their style and shots?

This question makes me want to cry.
